‘Inconvenient Dreams’ Review
“A Phil Spector girl-group party crashed by The Stooges.”
“The group put on one hell of a show, with animated singer Gabriel Hart and his Elvis lip flanked by backup vocalists Katya Hubiak and Jada Wagensomer, the latter of whom resembled a pouty Kim Novak.”
“Hart’s obsessively Orbison-esque vocal pleas can send shivers down the spine and draw a tiny tear to the eye in songs that reek of moody doo-wop and do not skimp on the steamy, heaving punk rock & roll.”
“Fans of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound pop will find much to love about Jail Weddings. The band picks up where 1960s doo-wop left off, crafting nostalgic, sweeping ballads with a modern, punk-rock edge.”
“With a band family bigger than ‘The Brady Bunch’ and a sound with more flair than Don King’s hair, Jail Weddings have created a sound that pays homage to the crooners and softies from yesteryear, and married it with the slashers and stompers from today’s rock scene.”
“This 10-person collective creates drunken anthems that owe a debt to Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound and are a favorite of KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox.”
There’s been a fair bit of blog buzz from LA about Jail Weddings, and not just because it’s a shit-why-didn’t-I-think-of-that GREAT name for a band. More out of curiosity than anything, I got hold of their Inconvenient Dreams mini-album (out 30th Nov over here), but I’ve had it on – loudly – at least once a day ever since. As a brief (and pretty lazy) introduction, Jail Weddings are essentially [...]
“Jail Weddings conjure up a jubilant atmosphere of doom and gloom that is also somehow grandiose, like a crumbling, cavernous ballroom strewn with empty bottles and soiled napkins after the world’s most sordid party.”
Ever wonder what would happen if you took the Decemberists, made them into a ten piece and forced them to listen exclusively to the teenage-focused pop of the early 1960s? Well, you just might get the Jail Weddings, a Los Angeles-based collective that is as retro as it is bizarrely awesome. Whenever a band has an all female crew of backup singers, they’re worth paying attention to. The Jail Wedding’s [...]
“A ten-piece act that’s like crimson lipstick, film noir, a pearl-handled handgun and a dash of Black Randy’s Metrosquad boiled together in a pot.”
